A little blog about the life of a somewhat lost dreamer....looking for my grace in this crazy world.

When the cock crows...

Someone in the neighborhood behind me has a rooster. I'm not sure if this person is an urban farmer, or if someone thought little yellow chicks would be a great Easter gift...without really thinking through the consequences. Either way, I am loving this.

I grew up on a farm. We had cows. Lots and lots of cows. Horses, a few pigs, tons of cats and dogs, a fox, a crow, a raccoon, rabbits...and when I was little, a very mean rooster and his harem of hens. Last week I was getting ready to step into the shower bright and early and thought..."what in the world is that sound...surely, it can't be...."

I listened more closely, and sure enough, I could make out the tentative "err-r-eeeerrrrrrr" of a fledgling rooster getting his crow on. I listened a bit more...yep, no mistaking it, there was the sound of a young rooster and he was giving it all he had. I laughed out loud. I mean...folks, I live IN the city...darned near downtown...and, while Lexington isn't HUGE, we aren't tiny either...and I really can't remotely recall the last time I heard a rooster crowing in town.

As I was getting into the shower early yesterday and I heard him again...and he's really pumping up those vocal cords. I laughed all the way to work...a rooster, in down town Lexington...crowing at dawn. I'm sure their neighbors hate it, but I think it sublime.

I wonder if he has a harem of hens to strut for?

Well, in our area, we have had a large population of immigrants migrate here. We have a big problem with cock fights. Most of the participants live in town. I hope that's not the situation for your rooster.

On the other hand, I live in a rural area. Over the years, there have been residents that raise a chicken or to for fresh eggs. The sound of a rooster in the morning is just so cool.

Great quote in your collage!

I live in rural Mexico. So roosters crowing every day is not new to me either. Our local cocks start crowing around 4:00 a.m. and don't let up until 9:00 or so.

I was puzzled by that, so asked around and was told, "Ahh señora, these roosters are for fighting and they must establish dominance by crowing earliest, loudest, longest ..."

It makes me sad to think these beautiful birds are destined for the cock fights, but I still enjoy their wake-up calls - over and over and over ... lol.

I live in the burbs and on my days off when i get to sleep in until at least the sun comes up I'am treated to roosters! It makes me smile EVERY time. To wake up smiling .....how wonderful is that?!
